A British company says its latest GPS system can warn truck drivers when they are approaching roads where they are most at risk of hitting a cyclist.
The device from Navevo is currently limited to offering alerts in London where transport officials have provided details of the 100 most dangerous spots, but the company said it intends to expand coverage to other areas later.

The announcement comes a week since an academic was killed while cycling to work at University College London, the BBC reported.

Climate scientist Katherine Giles was fatally injured after being hit by a dump truck, prompting London Mayor Boris Johnson to discuss banning large trucks from the capital unless they were fitted with cycle safety equipment.

Fifty-three cyclists were killed on London's roads between 2009 and 2012, said London Transport, which provided the information on the city's most dangerous spots to Navevo.
"This is the first time that this information has been made available to a company specifically to provide additional information for HGV [heavy goods vehicle] drivers," a spokesman said.

"We are happy to work with other developers should they wish to provide similar information within their products."
